COUNTRIES & LANGUAGES
The United
Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, simply called the United
Kingdom or UK, is a sovereign state in Northern Europe. It is a constitutional monarchy that is made up of four separate countries. It
is a member of the European Union, United Nations, the Commonwealth, NATO and the G8. It has the fifth largest economy in the world. The official language of the United Kingdom is English, which is spoken by approximately 59.8 million
residents, or 98% of the population, over the age of three.
Around 65 million people
live in the UK. They can be divided into four big nationalities based
on the countries where they live. These countries, and the names of the people
and language spoken there, are as follows:
·
England is
the biggest country, and the one where most people in the UK live. People who
live in England are called English. Their
native language is
called English, which
is spoken by almost everyone in the UK and has become a global lingua franca. A few
people in the southwest part of England can speak Cornish,
a Celtic language.
·
Scotland, to the
north of England, is the second biggest country. People who live here are
called Scottish, and
some speak languages called Scottish Gaelic, a Celtic
language, or Scots, which is a lot like English
but is different from it.
·
Wales is to the west of England.
Its people are called Welsh and
have their own Celtic language which is also called Welsh. Not
everyone in Wales can speak Welsh, but almost everyone can speak English.
·
Northern Ireland is
on the island of Ireland, which
is west of Great Britain where
the other three countries are on. Some Irish people live
here and speak Irish,
another Celtic language, or Ulster Scots, a dialect of the language spoken in
Scotland.
Between the 17th and mid
20th-centuries, Britain was a world power. It became a colonial empirethat
controlled large areas of Africa, Asia, North America and Oceania. Many
countries left and became independent from the empire in the 20th century,
although Britain keeps links with
most countries of its former empire.
The UK has many cities.
England is home to London, the biggest city in the UK and
also its capital city. There
are also many other big cities in England including Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol and Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Scotland has the big cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Cardiff and Swansea are
in Wales and Belfast is
in Northern Ireland. The UK had a dominating empire named the British Empire.
At its height in 1922, more than 458 million people lived in the British
Empire, one-fifth of the Earth's population. Its area was 13,012,000 sq mi,
almost a quarter of the Earth's land area. The British Empire was often called
'the empire on which the sun never sets', that describes a large empire,
because the sun is always shining on at least one of its territories.
The Federal
Republic of Germany, also called Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland or just Deutschland),
is a country in Central Europe. The country's full name is sometimes shortened to the FRG (or
the BRD, in German).
To the north of Germany are the North and Baltic Seas, and the kingdom of Denmark. To the east of Germany are the countries of Poland and the Czech Republic. To the south of Germany are the countries of Austria and Switzerland. To the west of Germany are the countries of France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The total area of Germany is 357,021 square kilometres (137,847
square miles). The large majority of Germany has warm summers and cold winters.
In June 2013, Germany had a population of 80.6 millionhttps://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany
- cite_note-population_estimate-13 people. After the United States,
Germany is the second most popular country for migration in the world.
Before it was called Germany, it was called
Germania. In the years A.D. 900 until 1806, Germany was part of the Holy Roman Empire. From 1949 to 1990,
Germany was made up of two countries called the Federal Republic of Germany
(inf. West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (inf. East Germany). During
this time, the capital city of Berlin was divided into a
west and an east part. On 13 August 1961, East Germany started building
the Berlin Wall between the two parts of Berlin. West Germany was one of the
countries that started the European Union.
The official language is German.
France (French: [fʁɑ̃s]), officially the French Republic (French: République
française [ʁepyblik fʁɑ̃sɛz]), is a country whose territory consists of metropolitan France in western
Europe, as well as several overseas regions and
territories.[XIII] The metropolitan area of France extends from the Mediterranean
Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. The overseas territories include French Guiana in South America and several islands in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. The country's 18 integral regions (five of which are situated overseas) span a combined
area of 643,801 square kilometres (248,573 sq mi) and a total
population of 67.15 million (as of October 2017). France is a unitary semi-presidential republic with its capital in Paris, the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial
centre. Other major urban centres include Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Nice, Toulouseand Bordeaux.
According
to Article 2 of the Constitution, the official language of France is French, a Romance language derived
from Latin. Since 1635, the Académie française has been France's official
authority on the French language, although its recommendations carry no legal.
There are also regional languages spoken in France, such as Occitan, Breton, Catalan, Flemish (Dutch dialect), Alsatian (German dialect), Basque, and
others.
China
China,
officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is
a unitary sovereign state in East Asia and
the world's most populous country, with a
population of around 1.404 billion. Covering
approximately 9,600,000 square kilometers (3,700,000 sq mi), it is
the third- or fourth-largest country by total area, depending on the source
consulted. China also has the most neighbor countries in
the world. Governed by the Communist
Party of China, it exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces,
five autonomous
regions, four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai,
and Chongqing), and
the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau.
Standard Mandarin, a variety of Mandarin based on the Beijing
dialect, is the official national language of China
and is used as a lingua franca in the country between people of different linguistic
backgrounds.
Egypt
Egypt (/ˈiːdʒɪpt/ ( listen) EE-jipt; Arabic: مِصر Miṣr, Egyptian Arabic: مَصر Maṣr, Coptic: Ⲭⲏⲙⲓ Khēmi), officially the Arab
Republic of Egypt, is a transcontinental country spanning
the northeast corner of Africa and southwest corner of Asia by a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula. Egypt is a Mediterranean country bordered by the Gaza Strip and Israel to the northeast, the Gulf of Aqaba to the east, the Red Sea to the east and south, Sudan to the south, and Libya to the west. Across the Gulf of Aqaba lies Jordan, and across from the Sinai Peninsula lies Saudi Arabia, although Jordan and Saudi Arabia do not share a land border with Egypt.
The official language of
the Republic is Arabic.
The spoken languages are: Egyptian Arabic (68%), Sa'idi Arabic (29%), Eastern Egyptian Bedawi Arabic (1.6%), Sudanese Arabic (0.6%), Domari (0.3%), Nobiin (0.3%), Beja (0.1%), Siwi and others.
Additionally, Greek, Armenian and Italian, and
more recently, African languages like Amharic and Tigrigna are
the main languages of immigrants.
The main foreign
languages taught in schools, by order of popularity, are English, French, German and Italian.
Historically Egyptian was
spoken, of which the latest stage is Coptic Egyptian. Spoken
Coptic was mostly extinct by the 17th century but may have survived in isolated
pockets in Upper Egypt as
late as the 19th century. It remains in use as the liturgical language of
the Coptic
Orthodox Church of Alexandria. It forms a separate
branch among the family of Afroasiatic languages.
Länder und Sprachen
Das Vereinigte
Königreich Großbritannien und Nordirland (englisch United Kingdom of Great
Britain and Northern Ireland?/i), kurz: Vereinigtes Königreich (englisch United
Kingdom?/i [juːˌnaɪ̯.tʰɪd ˈkʰɪŋ.dəm], internationale
Deutschland ( [ˈdɔʏtʃlant]; Vollform: Bundesrepublik
An Deutschland grenzen
Frankreich ( [ˈfʁaŋkʁaɪ̯ç]; amtlich Französische Republik, französisch République française [ʁe.py.ˈblik
fʁɑ̃.ˈsɛz],
Kurzform (la) France?/i [fʁɑ̃s]) ist
vgl. Taiwan-Konflikt.
