MARTHA TAILOR’S WEDDING DAY
Today
is a very special day. It’s Martha Tailor’s wedding day, and all her family and
friends are here. Everybody is having a wonderful time.
Martha is standing in front of the fireplace. She’s
wearing a beautiful white wedding dress. Uncle Chris is taking her picture, and
Aunt Emma is crying. She is very sentiment-
al. Nick and Pete, Martha’s brothers, are in the yard.
They are smoking.
Martha’s mother is dancing with her husband’s
father, and Martha’s father, Mr Tailor,
is dancing with her husband’s mother.
Everybody is having a good time. People are singing,
dancing, eating wedding cake, drinking champagne and talking about politics.
Martha’s grandparents, her grandfa-
ther and grandmother, are talking about ‘the good old
days”.
It’s a very special day.
T: So, answer the questions.
- Is the action taking place before or after the ceremony
in the church? Give your reasons.
- Are there many guests at the wedding ?
- What is the bridegroom’s name ?
- What name would you give him ?
- What is your opinion of the wedding? Is it merry ?
- Martha’s grandparents are talking about “the good old
days”. What does it mean for them ?
SPEAKING
T: Imagine that you are Martha’s grandfather and
grandmother and you are talking about “the good old days”. Act out the
dialogue. The rest of the pupils should listen and get out the information.
SUGGESTED DIALOGUE
Grandmother: Oh, dear! Looking at Martha’s happy face
I recollect our wedding day.
Do you remember my beautiful
snow-white dress?
Grandfather: Of course, I do! Though it was
forty-five years ago. You were the most
beautiful bride!
Grandmother: I remember that bright August day and
our wedding ceremony in the
Church. So happy and young
we were!
Grandfather: But, honey, I’m still happy today with
you! And I remember our honey-
moon when we had a
delightful cruise around Europe.
Grandmother: Oh, now I understand the real sense of
your wedding present to Martha,
This three weeks cruise on
board the ocean liner “Victoria” !
Grandfather: Perfectly true! I hope our newly-weds
will be happy during their honey-
moon as we were.
Grandmother: Oh, darling, you are the best husband
and the best grandpa in the world!
T: Now, girls, the task for you. Let’s have a piece
of gossip. One of you is Martha’s friend and were present at the wedding. The
rest of your friends are interested in this event very much. They want you to
tell them about your impressions of the wedding and to answer their questions
for more information. As you visited the wedding some days ago, tell about it
in the Past Tense.
( One of the girls
tells about the wedding-day.)
SUGGESTED QUESTIONS FOR MORE INFORMATION
- Were there many bridegroom’s guests at the wedding?
- I think that the bride and the bridegroom got many
presents. Which of the presents was the best?
- Who presented them the cruise?
- As far as I know, at the end of the wedding party the
bride throws her wedding bouquet to the unmarried girls. Who cought
Martha’s bouquet?
- What was the wedding cake like?
- SUMMING-UP. HOME ASSIGNMENT
T: We have discussed Martha’s wedding in details.
You have received a lot of information. So, at home you will have to write a
notice about Martha Tailor’s wedding-day for the local newspa-
per as if you are a reporter of its department of “High Life
News”.
Today we have spoken about special days in our life.
Each of us has his own special days and his own way of celebrating them. I am
sure, your future wedding will be a very special day in your life. Maybe you
will get a cruise around Europe as a wedding present.
Thank you for your work. See you!
