                                       Введение:

Teacher: Good morning, my friends! I hope you are fine today. You know our lessons are usually interesting, artistic, original and creative. So just now we are going to prove it.The British are famous for their language, sense of humour and, as everyone knows, politeness. Someone who is polite behaves towards other people in a pleasant way that follows all the usual rules of society.Have you ever heard about such word as Etiquette? Of course, you have. It came from the French language where it meant a «label, note». That was the name of the card which described how one should conduct at the court of the French King Louis the fourteenth.

Основная часть урока:Teacher: My students, I want you to write down the meaning of the word «Etiquette» according to the Macmillan English Dictionary for advanced learners and the special phrases we need for our lesson:to be polite to

to put it politely

just being polite

polite conversation

to have the courtesy to do smth. Etiquette is a set of rules for behaving correctly in social    Is a set of rules about behaviour for people in a particular profession: professional, business, diplomatic etiquette.

Teacher: Listen to the text: British people are quite reserved when greeting one another. A handshake is the most common form of reeting when you meet someone for the first time. It is only when you greet close friends or relatives that you would kiss them on the cheek or give them a hug. The British may also call you by many different affectionate names, such as dear, chuck, mate, guv, son, madam. Do not be offended, this is quite normal.

The British like their privacy, so not all topics are safe for small talk. Avoid asking people about their age, religion, politics, marital status, weight or how much they earn. Instead, acceptable small talk topics are family, films, television, sport, studies, food, hobbies and of course, the weather. When you visit people at home, make sure you are on time. It is also nice to take a gift for your hosts, such as a bunch of flowers, a box of chocolates. A British person might say «Come and see me soon», «Drop in any time». However, you must always phone before you visit someone.

And now let’s find out:

1) How do the British greet someone for the first time?

2) How do they greet friends and relatives?

3) What is the most popular talk about?

4) What are the British famous for?

5) What should you do when you visit a British person?

3. Students: they should discuss the text «Social Etiquette in the UK».

4. Teacher: So when you are in the UK, make sure you respect the scale» of politeness:

Will you stand over there?

Would you stand over there?

Would you mind standing over there?

Would you mind standing over there for a second?

I wonder if you’d mind just standing over there for a second?

The students are trying to use this scale in their own sentences in the written form and then to speak them aloud.

Teacher: To be known as a well-mannered person it is necessary to behave yourself politely and in a particular way but to know all the rules is impossible. We are trying to get to know more… I’ve written an English proverb. It reads: “He who knows how to work knows how to rest”. Let us discuss it. Is this proverb always true?  Are there any pupils who know well how to rest but know little how to work? Try to prove your opinion using such phrases as:

-I think                                                     I cannot add anything

-I believe                                                 I’m going to round up

-May I say a few words?                      As far as I can understand

-On the whole I agree with                  To sum it up

-It deals with                                           Actually

-To my mind                                           However -I’m sorry for interrupting                   On the one hand, on the other                                                                             hand

Teacher: Thank you for your participation in the discussion. As usually you have done it perfectly and our conversation was really polite. As far as I can understand you know well how to rest.

6. The students are listening to the tongue-twister:

Whether the weather be fine

Or whether the weather be not.

 Whether the weather be cold

Or whether the weather be not. We will walk together.

Whatever the weather

Whether we like it or not

The pupils are trying to learn it by heart.

7. Teacher:

If my memory does not fail me the most popular talk is about the weather. Do you agree with me? In 1758 Samuel Johnson, the great authority on the country, noted                 The student’s reports:

1«It is commonly observed, that when two Englishmen meet, the first talk is about the weather; they are in haste to tell each other, what each must already know, that it is hot or cold, bright or cloudy, windy or calm. ». As with much else in English life, this has remained unchanged and is cherished as a good English tradition.

                                                           2

The weather really is a national weakness. All the jokes and anecdotes which are told about this are totally justified.  In Europe talking about the weather means that you are:

Making polite conversation

Bored

Fulfilling the requirement of formal politeness

Talking to people you do not know

For the English, talking about the weather is entirely different:

Interesting Important

Necessary

Affects everybody

Each morning the English greet their neighbours with a phrase about the weather and swap this important information. The ability to hold a conversation about the weather is always seen as a sign of a good upbringing.

8. Teacher: It is not by chance that Professor Higgins, in George Bernard   Show’s Pygmallion , when turning his flower- girl into a Duchess first of all teaches her how to talk about the weather. And in the famous musical «My Fair Lady», the heroine even learns to pronounce her words properly using the phrases, of course, about the weather:

The students are listening to the most popular part of the musical «My Fair Lady”.

«The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain

In Hertford, Hereford and Hampshire…

Hurricanes hardly ever happen»

Students: are listening to the song from the musical «The rain in Spain»

…The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain!

Again? The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain!

I think she’s got it. I think she’s got it.

The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plains.

By George she’s got it! By George she’s got it!

Now, once again . Where does it rain?

On the plain! On the plain!

And where is that soggy plain?

In Spain!   In Spain!

In Hartford, Hereford, and Hampshire…?

Hurricanes hardly happened.

              9.  Grammar aspects:

Present Perfect vs Present Perfect Continuous

Students: are completing the letter by putting the verbs in brackets into the Present Perfect or the Present Perfect Continuous.

W.B. ex. 1 (p.16)

-It is necessary to put the verbs and explain the rules of formation    `10. Teacher: My friends, I remember when Peter Pan asks the children what they want more, TEA or ADVENTURE, they instantly reply- First TEA, please. Lewis Carroll made the mad tea party the central part of his novel «Alice in Wonderland» Miss Marple solves complicated crimes over a cup of tea, and with a cup tea also saves lost souls. How can we talk about the etiquette in the UK and not to remember about TEA…

Students: The report «Tea in English life» (using pictures)

                                                         1

Tea is one of the most important parts of English life. There’s nobody in England who is indifferent to tea. The famous English writer George Orwell proposed his golden rules for brewing tea: 1. Tea should from India or Ceylon. 2. Tea should be brewed in teapot. 3. Tea must be strong. 4. Tea should be drunk from high cylindrical cups. 5. Before the milk is added to the tea. 6. Tea should never be drunk with sugar, it spoils the taste.

                                                         2

Jerome K. Jerome wittily noted in his famous work “Three Men in a Boat”:  “It’s very strange, this domination of our intellect our digestive organs. We cannot work, we cannot think, unless our stomach wills so. After eggs and bacon, it says, “Work!” After beefsteak and porter, it says, “Sleep!” After a cup of tea, it says to the brains, “Now, rise, and show your strength. Be eloquent, and deep, and tender; see, with a clear eye, into Nature and into life; spread your white wings of quivering thought, and soar, a good-like spirit, over the whirling world beneath you, up through long lanes of flaming stars to the gates of eternity!”

 11. Teacher: As a result I can remind you about the compliments you should pay.

The students are reading and trying to bring them to life:-I admire your ability to do smth-It’s a pleasure to deal with you

-You are great at doing smth

-You are such a gentleman

-It’s a pleasure to talk to you

-You are so intelligent -I couldn’t help but notice your…

-I have to admit you are kind-hearted

Заключительная часть урока: 12. Teacher: As usually I am proud of you and if you don’t mind my saying, you are really excellent students. I admire your ability to understand me and to think on your feet. I know, no matter what, my students are very well-behaved. To sum it up we have already known some aspects about the British Etiquette. The results of this lesson are your results.

Your homework is 1. To learn the 1st part of the song «Rain in Spain»    2. To write a short article for an international

magazine (« Social Etiquette in Russia»)
