by finding answers in the text:
a)
Why is Guy Fawkes Day celebrated on the 5th of
November?
b)
Why do the figures made of straw have a mask for a face?
Bonfire Night
On the fifth of November every year English boys and girls carry
funny figures about the streets. These figures are made of straw and dressed in
an old coat and a hat, with a mask for a face.
The
children knock at the doors and sing:
“Remember, remember,
The fifth of November
Was Gunpowder Treason
and Plot1.
I see no reason
Why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot”.
The children expect people to give them some money which is spent
on fireworks. In the evening a bonfire is made, and the figures are burnt on
it. Each of these figures is called Guy Fawkes.
You want to know, of course, who Guy Fawkes was and what he did.
On November 5th, 1605, Guy Fawkes and some other people
planned to blow up English Parliament. The plot was discovered and Guy Fawkes
was hanged. At moment of his arrest he wore a mask on his face.
So ever since, as November 5th approaches, children let
off fireworks and burn straw figures on a big bonfire.

1)
Why is the Theatre Royal often called Drury Lane?
2)

3)
When do the actors and actresses of the Theatre Royal eat the
Badely cake?
The Theatre Royal
The Theatre Royal in Drury Lane is one of the oldest theatres in
London. It opened in 1663. The king was present at the performance; that is why
it was called Theatre Royal. Today most people call it Drury Lane by the name
of the street in w it stands. The theatre has many traditions. One of them is
the Badely cake, which began in the eighteenth century.
Robert Badely was a pastry-cook who became an actor and joined the
Theatre Royal. He was a good actor, and the plays in which he acted were always
a great success with the people of London. When Robert Badely was very old, he
left some money to the theatre. Robert Badely asked to buy cake and offer a
piece of it to each actors and actresses of the theatre on Twelfth Night every
year. Twelfth Night is the 6th of January, the twelfth night after
Christmas.
So, after the evening performance on the Twelfth Night, the actors
and actresses come down into the hall in their stage clothes and eat the Badely
cake.
