T. Hello dear boys and girls! Glad to see you! Today we have an unusual lesson. That’s why you have an excellent chance to show how you know English. We are going to work individually and in groups.

Let’s listen to music! (Tunes of famous adverts)

T. Do you recognize these tunes?

P. This is advertisement.

II. Warm up. (5)

T. You are right. Look at the screen. You can see quotes. Read them and think of what they are about and what the subject of our lesson is.

The best advertisement is a good product” (Alan Meyer – American advertising executive).

Advertisement is the mover of the trade” folk wisdom.

Advertising is the tool of the seller that helps him to affect you and make buy his good. Any advertisement won’t help to sell the thing that is impossible to sell” (from Parkinson’s lows).

P. I think the subject of our lesson is advertisement.

T. OK. Today we are going to discuss the problems of advertisement, its advantages and disadvantages. You’ll have an opportunity to use your lexical and grammatical knowledge in new situations.

Answer my questions, please.

What do you usually do when they show a commercial:

1. Do you switch off TV, change the channel or watch it?

2. Do commercial irritate you?

3. Do you buy anything new that has been advertised?

IV. Vocabulary practice. (5)

Choose the right equivalent for the words and phrases and translate into Russian.

stick in your head Become cheaper

get entertained Making you feel slightly angry

go down Be easy to remember

repetitive Careful about choosing what to do, buy, watch, etc.

annoying Help people do something

selective Done many times and in the same way

encourage Get amused and interested

V Reading (reading for specific information) (10)

Read what British teenagers wrote about advertisement and decide which of them are for TV advertising and which are against. Ex.1a p.31, and fill the table.

Work in 2 groups. The first group will protect ads. The second group is their opponents. Their task is to give bad points. Good luck!

give true information, famous people endorse products, teach you how to get the best value for your money, truthful, help you choose best products, help to improve your taste, are creative, informative, clever, funny, full of humor, fantasy, present an honest, realistic image of a product, people seem to be happy consumers.

stick in your head, the way people get entertainment, they are more interesting than programmers

do not talk about the products’ defects, make you buy one thing instead of another, are misleading, show life unrealistically, put pressure on consumers, are impossible to check, are silly, annoying, convince people to buy things they don’t need.

adverts should be banned, they are annoying and stupid, encourage people to buy presents,
