Thank
you so much. Take your place.

you know that in English there are steady conversational formulas. We call them

Could you give me examples of them? At first examples of greeting.

III.
Speech etiquette”.
Teacher:
Thank
you, girls! Perhaps, you’ve already heard something about levels of politeness.
Who could give a few details of three levels of politeness?
Student:
English
has three levels of politeness: formal, neutral and informal. Formal style of
communication is used for people we do not know, or people we need to be polite
to (like the boss!). We use formal type on formal occasions: in
institutions
and organizations,
in the business community. Neutral style of
communication is applied for people we do not know well. We use neutral type
for people we might never meet again, for meetings which are not very
important. For example, neutral level of communication style:
– Excuse
me, could you tell me the time, please?
Informal
style of communication is used for friends and family. We use informal type in
the family, for people we meet at parties, or when we are with friends.
For
example: – What time is it, Tom?
Teacher:
Good
for you. So, you can see a final round-up of all levels of politeness.
When
English people become very, very polite to you, this can mean that they are
angry about something.
(23-25
There
are various forms of address to the same person in English.
Who
could give some information about how to address people?
Student:
When
we address people in English we usually call our friends by their first name
(John or Mary). If we know the person less we use MR./MRS./MISS + surname.
Mr.
Brown- to a man
Mrs.
Brown- to a married woman
Miss
Brown- to a girl or unmarried woman
Mister,
Missus and Miss without a surname are not polite.
Other
forms of address are:
Sir
- to a man who is much older.
Madam
- used by shop assistants, waiters to their female customers.
Doctor
- to a medical practitioner.
Ladies
and Gentlemen - to an audience.
Excuse
me, (please) - to attract someone's attention, especially waiters, porters,
nurses or policemen.
Teacher:
Thank
you so much! It was interesting. Now, let’s look at the screen. This is Mr.
Blackwood. He is a professor of university. His name is Christopher (shortened form - Chris). His friends and his family
call him Christopher or
Chris. His wife calls him Dear when she is in a good mood or she
addresses him Chris in everyday trouble. His child calls
him Dad. When he is at work his students call him Professor
Blackwood. A shop assistant addresses him Sir at the shop.

Teacher:
So,
you know that conversational formulas help people to speak fluently while they
converse.
Could
you now divide into two groups, please? Choose the leader of your group and try
to match up the conversational formulas in English with their Russian
equivalents. The leaders of your groups have to fix them on the magnetic board
as quickly as they can. Is it clear? … Are you ready? Who can sound the answer?

Teacher:
I
would like to finish our lesson with the English proverb “All doors open to

All doors open to
courtesy”.
Student: «
Teacher:
Who
can express your own opinion according to this proverb with a little
poem?

Always
try to be polite
