«Город и село» 9 класс
Учебник: “Spotlight – 9” (Virginia Evans,

ближайшее окружение.

Оборудование: кинопроектор и экран, белая
доска, лингафон, картинки, фильм, аудиозапись.
Ход урока
1.Организационый момент.
2. Прослушивание звуков города и села.
3. Постановка целей и задач урока:
1) You have just listened to different sounds. What did they
remind you?
(the sounds of a big city and the sounds of a village)
2) What sounds are typical for big cities?
(signals of the cars, sounds of overcrowded streets)
3) What sounds are typical for a village?
(sounds of different animals, singing of the birds, clatter of
horses’ hoofs)
4) And now try to name the theme of the lesson.
(I think we shall speak about the life in cities and villages)
That’s right. And also we shall discuss the advantages and
disadvantages of living in cities and villages, the life in our small and quiet
town, our close neighborhood.
4. During our lesson we shall need new vocabulary. Let me
introduce you some new words: (I shall explain the meaning of the words in
English and you will have to translate them into Russian)
* dweller (an inhabitant or a resident ) – житель
* environment (surrounding nature) – окружающая
среда
* clatter of horses’ hoofs (the hard part on the foot of a horse
or some other animal) – копыто
* estate (property or belongings; things which belong to someone)
– имущество
* fume (strong, unpleasant and often dangerous gas which cars
throw into the air) – выхлопные газы
* public utility (payment for running water, gas, heating and
other conveniences) – коммунальные услуги
* thread (something that can cause to smth. dangerous) – угроза
* to be of benefit to (to profit, to do smth. very useful) –приносить
пользу
5. Now you will watch the film and choose: What life is better:
in a city or in a village.
(Film: “What is better – city or countryside?”)
6. Those, who have enjoyed the life in the city, raise your
hands. The rest of the pupils liked the life in the village as I see. Now, we
shall organize two teams: “the city dwellers” and “the
villagers”. The villagers may take the seats near the window. And
the city dwellers will take their seats opposite them, in that row.
“Villagers”, name some advantages of living in a village,
please:
The advantages of living in a village
- The
village has clean air and the environment is very beautiful.
- The
traffic is not busy and it does not cause accidents.
- The
villagers usually keep eyes on neighbor’s estates. They know each other
and are helpful to each other.
- The
cost of food is cheaper, healthier and tastier in the village.
- The
life is peace and quiet.
“City dwellers”, name some advantages of living in a city,
please:
The advantages of living in big cities
- In
a city there are many places to visit: theatres, cinemas, galleries,
places of interest, clubs, supermarkets and many others.
- In
big cities there are good schools, universities and other educational
centres.
- You
can buy any goods you want.
- You
can make an excellent career in a big city.
- It
is easier to find a job in a city.
- City
never sleeps, at night you can relax and spend a great time in a café or a
nightclub.
- You
can get any high professional help if you have some problems with your
health.
Now, “Villagers”, name some disadvantages of living in a city,
please:
The disadvantages of living in big cities
- Traffic
fumes and smoke from the big plants pollute the atmosphere.
- Constant
noise influences a nervous system.
- Crowded
streets and traffic jams prevent the city dwellers to get to work in a
short time.
- You
have to use public transport to get to work or even to school. In a
crowded public transport you feel uncomfortable.
- City
dwellers live under constant thread. The rate of crime in big cities are
high. Houses are burgled, people are afraid of going out at night.
- The
streets are dusty and unclean.
Now, “City dwellers”, name some disadvantages of living in a
village, please:
The disadvantages of living in a village
- Education
in the village is poor.
- If
the children want to continue their education in the university they have
to go and live in the city.
- There
is little job in the village.
- You
can’t get high professional medical help if you are seriously ill.
7. Now let’s name the advantages (disadvantages) of living in a big
city (village) in some words, write them down on a piece of paper and attach
them on the blackboard.
- Tell in some words why people especially young people prefer to
live in a city.
(Because of modern things and standards;)
- And
why do some people prefer to live in a village?
(Because they love nature and peace.)
I think it should be good both weather you choose city or
countryside. Everywhere you can be an excellent specialist in any brunch of the
national economy and be of benefit to it.
8. Answer some questions:
1) What place do we live in (in a city or in a village)? (we live
neither in a city nor in a village, we live in a town);
2) What is the name of your native town? (the name of my native
town is Snezhnoe);
3) How old is our town? (232, it was founded in 1784 );
4) How can you characterize your town? (miner’s, small, peaceful,
industrious, quiet, clean, beautiful, cosy, heroic, colorful in different
seasons);
5) What kind of town is Snezhnoe? Is it an agricultural or an industrial
town? (It is a industrial town);
6) What are the main branches of industry in our town? (the main
brunches of industry are the coal industry and the machine building industry);
7) What are the main plants in our town? (the main plants are: the
Machine Building Plant and the Chemical Machine Building Plant)
9. Now we shall see how well you know your native town. Let’s
play a game. I shall read the descriptions of some place in our town and you
will have to name them. The answers you will see in pictures on the screen .
Guess your native town
- It
is a building in the very centre of the town. We go there to watch films,
concerts and plays. (The cinema “Snezhinka”)
- We
always depart to some other paces by buses from there. (The
bus station)
- This
is the place where we can begin our travelling by train. (The
railway station)

largest shop in our town where we can buy different goods: from clothes up
to TV sets. (The Department store “Shakhtyor” )
- The
biggest plant which produces the parts for the planes. (The
Machine Building Plant)
- The
cultural place where we can see the memorial things from the Great
Patriotic war. (The Battle Glory museum)

educational establishment in the very centre of our town where you
study. (Secondary School № 1)
- The
memorial complex to the heroes of the Great Patriotic war who gave their
lives defending our country from the enemies. (Saur-Grave)

big two-storied store where we can buy everything for our homes:
furniture, dishes and many other things. (The store:
“Everything is for home”)
10) The place where we can buy different food
which the farmers have grown themselves. (The market)
11) The place where we can pray to God and be present at the
church service. (The Church)
12) The establishment where we can keep our money and pay our
public utilities. (The bank)
13) It is the place where we can have our teeth treated. (The
dentist hospital)
14) The educational establishment where the children enter after
finishing school to get
different professions. (The technical school)
15) The educational establishment where the children of our town
can attend different sports sections. There also sports competitions in
volleyball, basketball and other kinds of sports are held. (The sports
school)
16) The place where we can send and receive parcels, letters;
buy stamps and envelopes; keep a post- box for mail and press. (The
post office)
17) The plant which produces the machines for
Chemical industry. (The Chemical Machine Building plant)
10. Living in a city, a town or a village all
of us have neighbors who live next to us. We often meet, know much about each
other, ask for help when we need. Will you tell some words about your neighbors
who live next door in your block of flats or in the near-by house.
(pupils give their variants of answers about their neighbors)
- kind, selfish, noisy, friendly, helpful, sociable, talkative,
rude,
11. Give your examples of your neighbors and
describe them in different situations:
1) My neighbor is selfish and easy-annoyed. (Not all of my neighbor
are good and kind.
My neighbor from the lower floor is very selfish and easy-annoyed.
She often
Complains that we annoy and disturb her. She says that we throw
cigarette-ends on her balcony but we don’t do that because nobody smokes in our
family.)
2) My neighbor is helpful and sociable. (My next-house neighbor i
sociable and
helpful. She always cares of my pets. She likes to talk to me and
my mom on
different themes.)
3) My neighbors are helpful and friendly. (My neighbors are
friendly and very helpful.
They often care for my plants when we go somewhere. We support
friendly relation-
ships and often visit each other to have tea or just to talk.)
4) My neighbor is selfish and rude. (When he drives into the yard
he leaves the gates
open and takes two places in the parking lot. When he hangs their
laundry on the
balcony, the drops from the wet laundry fall on our window and we
need to clean it.)
5) My neighbor is helpful but a little silly. (Every time when my
Dad calls him to help he is always ready to help. I think that he is silly
because he is irrational)
6) My neighbors are amazing, quiet and kind. (When I want to
listen to a loud music they are not at home but when I need something, some
salt or sugar, they are at home. We arealso close friends. If somebody needs
any help everybody is ready to help. We often get together to spend our
holidays.)
7) My neighbors are good, sociable and quiet. (They often invite
us to visit them and are
always ready to help.)
8) My neighbors are noisy and talkative. (They often listen to
loud music late at night.
Their baby runs and taps very loudly.)
9) My neighbor is noisy and crazy. (He often organizes noisy
parties.)
10) My neighbor is good, helpful and caring. (She always helps us
if we need a help. She
cares of our flowers when we are out.)
12. Different situations can happen in our
life when we need some help and we go to the
neighbors and ask them for help, so do they. Some situations are
given on the screen and you will have to make dialogues on these situations.
- Your
neighbor listened to loud music yesterday and you had bad sleep at night.
- Your
neighbor’s dog keeps digging up flowers in your garden.
- You
wonder if your neighbors would like you to babysit for them on their
wedding
anniversary.
- Your
next-door neighbor is ill. You offer to do his shopping for him.
- You
are leaving for some days and you ask your neighbor to look after your
flat or house and feed your cat.
You may use necessary expressions making up your dialogues given
to the screen:
- Would
you like to …
- It
would be a pleasure …
- Would
you be able to …
- Would
you mind not (V+ing) …
- I
don’t mind …
- I
am so sorry …
- You
will be so kind …
Dialogues:

- I am so sorry but yesterday I had my birthday party. A lot of
guests came to congratulate me on my birthday.
- I don’t mind you celebrate your birthday but would you mind not
to listen to loud music till late at night. I fell asleep late and had bad
sleep.
- I am so sorry. Next time we shall try not to disturb you.
- You will be so kind. I think we shall remain good neighbors.
- So do I.
2) - Hello.
- Hello. Excuse me, I am so sorry but I want to complain about
your dog.
- Did it disturb you? Did it bark loudly?
- No, it didn’t. But it keeps digging my flowers in the garden.
- Oh, I am so sorry. I won’t let it walk where it wants. And I
will help you to plant flowers.
- It’s Ok. I shall plant them myself. But please, control where
your dog is and what it does.
- I will. Excuse me and my disobedient dog.
- Everything is Ok.
3) - Hello.
- Hello. Can I ask you for some help?
- You are welcome. What has happened?
- Everything is all right. But I want to ask you to do some favor?
- What can I do for you?
- On Sunday we shall have our wedding anniversary and need to
babysit with our little son.
- I can help you, I shall be free on Sunday and you son is so
sweet.
- You will be so kind. Thanks a lot. We shall bring him in the
morning on Sunday.
- Ok. I shall be waiting. Don’t be afraid. Everything will be all
right. Good bye.
- Good bye. Till Sunday.
4) - Hello, it’s your neighbor on the right.
- Hello, has something happened?
- I fell ill. I have a high temperature and can’t go shopping.
- Oh, why haven’t you called me earlier? What can I do for you? Do
you need a medical
help?
- No, the doctor has already been. Will you be so kind to buy some
medicines and food?
- Yes, of course. I shall call now. You will just give the
prescription and the list of food.
- You are so kind. Thanks a lot.
- I shall come in two minutes.
5) – Good morning.
- Good morning. I see you have a luggage. Where are you going?
- I am going to visit my relatives who live in another town. I
want to ask you to look after my flat and feed my cat.
-Don’t worry I shall do that. What does your cat like to have?
- It likes fish and milk. The food is in the fridge. Here is the
key.
- Ok. How often is it necessary to feed it?
- Two times a day.
- Don’t worry I shall do everything you have asked me.
- Thank you very much. I promise to bring you a souvenir from my
trip. Good bye.
- Good bye. Happy journey!
13. To finish the lesson answer my questions:
