ХОД МЕРОПРИЯТИЯ
I. Организационный момент. Введение.
Good morning, my dear boys and girls. I am glad to see
you here today!
Today’s lesson is going to be quite unusual. It’s a special lesson dedicated to
the landmarks and peculiar buildings of English-speaking countries. (Слайд
1)
But before we start, let me ask you this question: What
is an English-speaking country?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It’s a country where a lot of people speak English).
All right! Now, which English-speaking countries do you know?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
The United Kingdom\Great Britain, the United States of America, Australia, New
Zealand, Canada, и т.д.)
Very well! Today we are going to see some very interesting sights of several of
these countries. In the focus of our attention there are going to be many landmarks
and peculiar buildings you can see if you ever visit one of these countries.
So, let’s begin!
II. Основная
часть. Экскурсия.
1. Great Britain
(Слайд
2). And we shall begin with the country everyone here knows very well – the
first country we are going to visit is Great Britain.
Tell me please, does this country have any other names?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It is also called The United Kingdom)
That’s right! The full name of this country is The United Kingdom of Great
Britain and Northern Ireland. And our first stop is going to be the famous Big
Ben (слайд 3).
Could you tell me, what is Big Ben?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It is a clock\clock tower\tower with a clock).
Yes, as we all know Big Ben is a clock tower: a tower with a big clock in it. (Слайд
4). It is the symbol of London, the capital of England, and of the whole Great
Britain. Does anyone know when it was built?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It was built in the 19th century)
Big Ben was actually built more than 150 years ago: it
was completed in 1859
(слайд 5). In fact it is not just a tower
with a clock, it is a part of the Palace of Westminster, the house of the
British Parliament (слайд 6). By the way,
the clock is very loud: they say that you can hear the bells even when you are
quite far away from the clock.
Our next stop is going to be Tower Bridge (слайд
7).
Do you know this bridge? Are you familiar with it?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
Yes, we do\Yes, we are).
It was also built in the 19th century and it has been around since
1894 (слайд 8). It is quite a long bridge: its
length is 244 meters. By the way, have you noticed that it has two levels? Take
a closer look at this picture: there are two levels – the lower level is for
the cars, and the upper is a walkway for the people who want to cross the river
Thames (слайд 10).
Another interesting place to visit in London is the Buckingham Palace (слайд
11).
Does anyone know what it is famous for?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It is famous because it is the Queen’s residence)
The Buckingham Palace is so well-known because it serves as a residence of the
British Queen. In fact, it has been the official residence and principal
workplace of the British Monarchs since 1837 (слайд
12).
Do you recognize the men with tall black hats on this picture? Who are they?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
They are from the Queen’s Guard)
If you didn’t know, these men serve in the Queen’s Guard and their job is to
protect the Queen and her residence (слайд
13). By the way, you can actually visit the Buckingham Palace during two
months: August and September (слайд
14).
The next stop we are going to make is the Trafalgar Square (слайд
15). It is a public square in Central London. It got its name in 1805 (слайд
16). It was called so to honor the Battle of Trafalgar, in which Britain won
the Napoleonic Wars in the sea with France and Spain. The final battle took
place on 21 October 1805 near the Cape Trafalgar, Spain.
Another great sight to see in London is Piccadilly Circus (слайд
17).
Can anyone tell me what the Piccadilly Circus is?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It’s a place where the streets cross each other)
Despite what you might think, it’s not a circus. This is a place where two
streets, Regent Street and Piccadilly, meet. So, in other words it’s a road
junction. The word “Circus” is used in the meaning of “circle” – that’s the way
the traffic – all the cars – goes in this place. It was built in 1819 to
connect Regent Street and Piccadilly (слайд
18). Nowadays it is considered to be the most lively place in Central London.
All right, let’s have a look at another wonderful sight situated in London (слайд
19). It’s the Westminster Abbey. How many of you know it? What type of building
is it?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It’s a church)
Yes, it is a church, which is situated just near the Palace of Westminster and
the Big Ben. The building is mainly in Gothic style and it is very beautiful. Although
it is not a common knowledge, many famous people like William Shakespeare,
Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill and others are buried there (слайд
20).
Do you know, what else is a very important fact about the Westminster Abbey?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It’s the place for the coronation of British monarchs)
Actually, since 1066 all the British Kings and Queens were crowned here (слайд
21). Moreover, there have been at least 16 royal weddings at the abbey since
1100. So you can definitely say it plays an important role in the life of the
British royal family.
One other peculiar building you can visit while walking through the capital of
Britain is the Tower of London (слайд
22). Could you tell me, what type of building is it?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It is a tower\fortress).
By all means, it is a fortress (слайд
23), but not so long ago it was also a prison for the British felons. The fact
is, it was a prison until the Second World War (слайд
24).
And the last peculiar building of Great Britain we are going to see today is
the Royal Albert Hall (слайд 25). It is much
less known than, for example, Big Ben, but if you are familiar with the world
of music, you already know that it is a concert hall – a lot of musicians play
their concerts in this building (слайд
26). It was opened in the 19th century, in year 1871. And it looks
even more luxurious on the inside than on the outside (слайд
27). It is an honor for every musician to perform on this beautiful stage (слайд
28).
2. The USA
The next country we are going to talk about is The
United States of America (слайд
29). And the first landmark of this country is the world-famous Statue of
Liberty (слайд 30). You can find it in
New York.
By the way, do you know where it was built?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It was built in France)
Yes, we know for a fact that the Statue of Liberty was given to the citizens of
the USA as a gift by the citizens of France (слайд
31). And the sculptor of this monument was also French. The most famous tower
in Paris was also built by him.
Do you know his name?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
His name is Eiffel\Gustave Eiffel)
It is not that hard to guess if you remember the world-famous Eiffel Tower in
Paris. Gustave Eiffel, the sculptor of this tower, was also the one to build
the Statue of Liberty (слайд 32). This
sculpture was dedicated to the citizens of the USA on October 28, 1886. As for
its location, it is situated on a small island called Liberty Island in Upper
New York Bay (слайд 33).
To witness the next landmark of the USA, we have to go from the East to the
West Coast of this country. This is the Golden Gate Bridge (слайд
34).
Can you tell me, in which city is it situated?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It is situated in San Francisco)
Yes, this amazing bridge is situated in San Francisco, state California (слайд
35).
It was opened in the 20th century, in year 1937 to be exact (слайд
36). Since then it has become a symbol of San Francisco alongside with its
hills and has appeared in a lot of different films, so I’m not surprised this
bridge looks so familiar to many of you (слайд
37).
In fact, it is fair to call the Golden Gate the most famous bridge in the USA.
And we are back to New York! (Слайд
38). The building you can see on this picture is called the Empire State
Building. Tell me, please, why is it so famous?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It is the highest building in New York nowadays).
Yes, apart from its majestic looks this building is considered the highest one
in New York after the tragic events occurred on 11th September 2001
(слайд 39). As well as the Golden Gate
Bridge, it was built in the last century, and the building was completed by
1931 (слайд 40). Another peculiar fact about the
Empire State Building is that it has 102 floors. No wonder it is one of the
main tourist attractions in this city (слайд
41).
Now let’s move to the capital of the USA, the city of Washington. Here we can
find the Lincoln Memorial (слайд
42). This huge monument was being built from 1916 till 1922 (слайд
43). Do you know why it is called the Lincoln Memorial? Which person’s name do
you notice while looking at these pictures?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
Abraham Lincoln)
You are absolutely right: this monument is dedicated to the 16th
President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln (слайд
44). This president is most famous for leading the United States through its
Civil War and abolishing slavery (слайд
45).
The memorial itself is situated on the territory of a huge park called the
National Mall (слайд 46).
Ok, it’s time to visit another city of the USA. I’m talking about Chicago (слайд
47). On its territory there is quite an interesting place called the Millennium
Park. While they planned to open it in 2000, it was actually completed only 4
years later, by 2004.
And the most peculiar monument you can see there is called the Cloud Gate (слайд
48). While being built in the USA, it has an Indian-born creator who lives in
Britain – his name is Anish Kapoor (слайд
49). The shape and the size of this extraordinary monument are the reasons it
is so popular among the visitors of Chicago (слайд
50). Apart from its official name – the Cloud Gate – this monument has also got
a nickname: many people call it “The Bean” (слайд
51). This monument was being built from 2004 till 2006, is made of stainless
steel and weighs about 100 tons (слайд
52).
Another quite peculiar sight, which is actually a building, can be found in
Seattle. It is called The Space Needle (слайд
53). Apart from its futuristic shape, it is actually a very tall building: it
is 184 high (слайд 54). Though it looks so out-of-this-world,
it was built more than half a century ago, in 1961 (слайд
55). Can you guess what type of building is it?
(Предполагаемый ответ:
It’s a tower\observation tower)
Well, it is an observation tower (слайд
56), but it’s not just that. If you take the elevator (слайд
57), you will find yourself at the restaurant (слайд
58) with a fantastic view (слайд
59). The Space Needle is considered the symbol of Seattle and I think we can
all agree that it deserves such a honorable title (слайд
60).
3.
New Zealand
Now it’s time to visit another English-speaking
country. We are going to the New Zealand! (Слайд
61). New Zealand is a much smaller country than the USA, so you won’t be able
to find such a huge number of peculiar buildings and landmarks as in the United
States. Nevertheless, there is a very interesting place called “Hobbiton” (слайд
62). If you ever happen to go to New Zealand, you should know that this place
is situated near town called Matamata (слайд
63). If some of you haven’t already guessed what this place is famous for, then
take a closer look at these pictures (слайд
64)… And maybe you will remember that it is the very place where the famous
film trilogy “The Lord of the Rings” was filmed (слайд
65). This film trilogy is world-famous, so no one is surprised by huge numbers
of visitors every year. This place is very popular (слайд
66). And it looks just like a fairytale come alive! (слайд
67). Not only can you walk around this beautiful scenery, but you can come
inside the tiny houses as well (слайд
68). All in all, it is a place you have to visit if you ever
happen to be in New Zealand (слайд
69).
4. Australia
And the last country on our route today is going to be
Australia (слайд 70). This country is
well-known for its rich wildlife, but just like in New Zealand there aren’t a
lot of unique buildings, so today we are going to see only the most
extraordinary one. Perhaps, many of you will recognize this fantastic building
at once: it’s the Sydney Opera House (слайд
71). It’s a performing arts centre, which means that it can be used for
different purposes and various sorts of events can be held in there (слайд
72). Such a peculiar building, which reminds many people of seashells, was not
designed by an Australian citizen: the author of the design is Danish architect
Jørn Utzon (слайд 73). It was completed in
1973 (слайд 74). But it took the workers almost
14 years to complete the building (слайд
75). And today it is probably the most interesting building in Australia (слайд
76). In some photos it looks truly mesmerizing (слайд
77).
III. Подведение
итогов экскурсии.
So, that’s all for today! Our journey is over. Now let
me ask you which building or landmark did you like the most? Why? Which
English-speaking country would you like to visit? Thank you for your attention and
for your work today! Goodbye!
