1. Tuning-in/Организационный
2. Aim Presentation/
Today we are going to revise
all the information about different ways of connecting computers into the net.
We'll remember various types of topologies. And also we’ll discuss
some major points concerning the global or worldwide net known as the Internet.
So the topic of our class is "The Internet as means of worldwide
communication". We'll continue developing our speaking skills, listening
comprehension skills, abilities of solving and developing some problem
situations. Also we'll deal with fulfilling creative task by means of picture
basis and your graphics abilities.
The most important thing is
that the potential of our skills we’ll be
developed, mastered and cheked up by means of computer technologies.
3. Warming-up /Речевая
разминка
3.1
Ø What
is it LAN? Decode this abbreviation and give definition of this term. (LAN -
Local Area Network - a
network that is connected over a small area - e.g.
onе building).
Ø Where
are these networks used, in what public places? (They
are widely used in educational establishments, hotels, department stores
businesses etc.)
Ø What
is it WAN? Decode this abbreviation and give definition of this term. (WAN -
Wide Area Network - a
network connected over a large area - e.g.
different buildings, different cities, different countries etc.)
Ø Look
at picture a. What type of topology is it? Give the definition of this
topology. (This is a star topology. It is the topology where all the
computers are connected to central hub by separate cables).
Ø What
is it hub? (Hub is an electronic device used for connecting computers).
Ø Look
at picture b. What type of topology is it? Give the definition of this
topology. (This is a mesh topology. It is the topology where all the
computers are connected each other by separate cables).
Ø Look
at picture c. What type of topology is it? Give the definition of this
topology. (This is a bus topology. It is the topology where all the computers
are connected to main cable that is terminated at the ends).
Ø Look
at picture d. What type of topology is it? Give the definition of this
topology. (This is a ring topology. It is the topology where all the
computers are connected in closed loop).
You
know that most networks use a mixture of topologies because all of the above
mentioned ones have got their advantages and disadvantages. They deal with
different, problems while using them. Now I'll describe you some situations and
you should name the topology.
1)
If one of the computers fails the whole network will be affected. (ring
topology)
2)
If the main cable fails, the whole network will fail. (bus topology)
3)
If the central server fails, the whole network will fail. (star
topology)
4)
If a cable breaks, the whole network will be affected, (ring topology)
5)
If a computer fails, it won't affect the other computers, (bus
topology)
3.3
"The Internet -
Superhighway through the Wasteland? It is a never-ending worldwide connversation.
The Internet is the most powerful magnifier of people's attention ever invented."
Mitchell Kapor
1)
What do the words "superhighway" and "wasteland"
mean? Decode their metaphoric meaning.
2)
Does the phrase "never-ending conversation"
mean that you can use the Internet any time you wish and it will
work?
3)
The Internet is a "great magnifier of people's attention".
What other "great magnifiers of people's attention"
can you think of?
II.
Teacher's introduction.
You know that all inventions have their history like people do.
The same situation we have got with the Internet. At first people
had only local networks and only after some time they felt necessity of
connecting computers for creating one global communicative and informative net -
THE INTERNET.
This
network was invented in the late 60s by American
militaries for providing an effective communicative connection in the case of
enemies'
attack.
At first the net included only four computers that had to show the
possibilities of the system. In 1972 50 universities were
attached to the net, and in 1980 the work of the net was provided by
supercomputers. In 1991 the Internet was formed as
communicative area that connected local and regional networks. The number of
users is increasing all the time. And now we have a great possibility of using
this system for different purposes.
The brainstorming.
слово «Email» и объясняют: “Email - the common name
for electronic mail. The electronic mail is sent by means of the Internet”.
the Internet some people find love at first byte”.
Listening Comprehension.
Computer and biologic viruses function very similarly. A
computer virus can behave even like an AID virus. It seems that some viruses
even have their own immune systems”.
Tapescript:
Listen to Steve, a computer
technician, and Richard, the office manager at a language institute, talking
about computer security. After you listen to the conversation read the
following questions and choose the right answers.
Richard: Hi. Steve. Are you
busy?
Steve: No, not really.
Richard: Good. If you've got a
minute, I'd like to talk to you about computer security. I saw a program on TV
the other evening about computer hackers. It made me realize that our network
system isn't very secure. We have a lot of sensitive information in our data
bank, and I think perhaps we should install some kind of system to protect it.
Steve: That's a good point. Theoretically, anyone could call in and
connect their personal computers at home to the office network. All they'd need
is a modem.
Richard: Exactly. There is
nothing to stop students calling in and changing their grades, for example.
They could even change their records to show that they'd pay for a course when
they hadn't.
Steve: Hmm. What we need is a
password.
Richard: Yes. But the problem
with passwords is what people do with them. Some put them on scraps of paper on
their computer terminals. Others use their own names, or a partner's name. That
just makes life easy for a hacker.
Steve: True, but it is not just what
people do with them. The whole idea of using real words is risky. There are
programs now that will try every word in the dictionary. If you want to make
life difficult for the hackers, it's much safer to use a random mixture of
numbers and letters.
Richard: I suppose so. But isn't
it possible to buy a security system?
Steve: Of course. It depends how much
you want to spend. You can even buy a system that changes the password every
single minute.
Richard: Every minute? Then how do
the authorized users know what the password is?
Steve: They carry a smart card that
shows a constantly changing number. The number is the password.
Richard:
Very
clever!
Steve:
Yes,
as long as you don't leave your card lying around.
After-listening
test
1. What is the problem
with the computer system at the language institute?
A. The network system doesn't
work well.
B. The network system isn't
very secure.
C. The network system needs to
be repaired.
2. What would someone need
to connect his/her PC to the office network?
A. A central cable.
B. Much money and a good
modem.

data bank because it is authorized.
4. What is the problem
with passwords?
A.
There is no problem with passwords. It is not a problem that they simple.
B.
They make hackers' lives easy. Hackers need only some minutes your password.
They need only the dictionary.
C. The
teachers from other institutes can use the sensitive informal data banks of
other universities.
5. How does the smart card
work? Is it safe?
A. It
shows a constantly changing letter. It is safe if you don't leave lying around.
The letter is a password.
B. It
shows a constantly changing number. It is safe as long as leave the card lying
around. The number is a password.
C. It
shows a constantly changing combination of numbers and letters very safe.
6. What is it risky about
passwords?
A. The idea of using your
personal name.
B. The idea of using your
personal date of birth.
D.
The idea of using real words.
Project work
Проект называется “The
Internet as I see it”;
III.
Internet as the catastrophe?”
(Times New Roman,
Ø Angela
has no friends or neighbours who can identify her, because for four years she
has lived entirely in the Internet
Ø The
Internet is the most powerful source of getting information
Ø The
Internet is a great variety of dirty pictures, inaccurate rumours, bad spelling
and even worse grammar
Ø The
Internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it is a
complete substitute for life. ~Andrew Brown
Ø
The Internet is a giant international network of intelligent,
informed computer enthusiasts, by which I mean, “people without lives”. We
don't care. We have each other. ~Dave Barry
