The Altai Territory is located in the South of Western Siberia. The average length of the territory from the North to the South is 360 km, from the West to the East is 585 km.
In the South and the Southeast it borders upon Kazakhstan, in the Southwest – upon the Altai Republic, in the West and the Northwest – upon the Kemerovo Oblast, in the North – the Novosibirskaya oblast.
The main rivers: the Ob and its inflows.
The unique band-type pine forests, which are met only in the Altai Territory, grow along the rivers.
There are a lot of closed steppe lakes in the Altai Territory. The largest among them is the Lake Kulundinskoye.
In whole the Altai Territory can be characterized by the temperate climate of extreme, i.e. the contrast between a short warm summer and a long cold winter. The average temperature in January is -19 0C, in July +19 0C. The weather can be here unstable with a frequent temperature drop in any season. The temperature in steppe areas at the end of December or the beginning of January can be -30-35 0C, and in July +35-38 0C
The Altai – the big mountainous country – is located upstream the river Ob, which is formed by the confluent of two rivers – the Biya and the Katun, which originated from glaciers and the lakes of the Altai Highlands.
The city lies along the Ob River in the West Siberian Plain.
Barnaul was one of the earlier cities established in Siberia.
Originally chosen for its proximity to the mineral-rich Altai Mountains and its location on a major river, the site was founded by the wealthy Demidov family in the 1730s.
In 1747, the Demidovs' factories were taken over by the Crown, and soon became the major silver center of Russia.
By the 1900s, Barnaul had grown into a major center for trade and culture of the region, especially after the construction of the Turkestan-Siberia Railway.
Barnaul is an important industrial center in Western Siberia. There are more than 100 industrial enterprises in the city, employing approximately 120 thousand people.
The main business street of the city is Leninsky Prospect, which runs southwest from the Ob River through the center of the city.
Zmeinogorsk located in the Altai Krai in Kolyvansky foot ridge at an altitude of about 450 meters from the river and its tributaries Korboliha – Zmeevka river – of 360 km from Barnaul.
Zmeinogorsk located in the very hilly terrain, but its surrounding mountains are deprived of vegetation and stone.
In Mount Zmeevoy preserved fragments of Mines 18-19 centuries. (Zmeinogorsky, Petrovsky, Cherepanovsky), a mountain pond and dam – 18 outstanding technical installations century, tremendous historical object – a unique underground city Demidovyh, Kolyvansky lapidary factory, founded in 1802 (60 km from the city).
