First of all we’ll speak about the biography of a famous and well-known all
over the world English writer Charles Dickens.
Pupil 1. Charles Dickens was born
in Portsmouth in 1812. He was a weak child and didn’t like noisy and active
games. The little boy was very capable. He learned to read at an early age and
read many books in his childhood. When he was about six, someone took him to
the theatre for the first time. He saw a play by Shakespeare and liked it so
much, that he decided to write a play himself. When it was ready, he performed
it together with his friends.
Pupil 2. When Charles was nine,
the family moved to London. Charles’ father was a poor clerk who could never
make both ends meet. He could not get any work there for a long time and was
taken to prison for debts. His wife with all the children except Charles went
into the prison too. The family lived in the prison until Mr. Dickens could pay
the debts. Later Dickens
described this
prisonin“Little Dorrit”.
Pupil 3. When his father came out
of the prison, Charles was sent to school and stayed there for three years. He
learned foreign languages and literature. When he was fifteen he had to leave
school and start earning his own living as a clerk in a lawyer’s office in
London. He spent most of his time reading in the British Museum and in this
way he educated himself.
Pupil4. In 1836 when he was only
twenty four Dickens published his first book – a collection of sketches of
London life. In the same year he began publishing his“Pickwick Papers”. When
the first sketchers appeared, Dickens was an unknown writer. But when the novel
was finished, he became the most popular writer of the time.
Pupil5. In 1842 Dickens made a
trip to America. He spent several months there visiting different parts of the
country and was greatly disappointed with what he saw in the USA. In his book
“American Notes” he described with greatly indignation the conditions under
which the Negroes lived in America, a realistic picture of American democracy
and the corruption of the American press.
Pupil6. Dickens is one of the
most beloved English writers in our country. We highly value his novels for
their realism, their humour, their love and sympathy for ordinary people. His
books are translated and are read all over the world.

We suggest you to be listenersfor some minutes. А
narrator will be the young author Charles Dickens . He’ll read the first
chapter from the novel “The Pickwick Club”.
2.
The narrator. On a sunny morning of the
thirteenth of May, 1827 Mr. Samuel Pickwick rose from his bed, opened the
window and looked out at the world before him. Goswell Street was at his feet,
Goswell Street was on his right, Goswell Street was on his left, Goswell Street
lay in front of him. Mr. Pickwick was not happy to see only Goswell Street. He
wanted to see life in other places surrounding the street.
Soon after breakfast Mr. Pickwick with a bag in his
hand, a telescope and a note-book in his pocket was ready to meet adventures.
He took a cab and went to
“Golden Cross”, an inn where his friends were waiting
for him. On the way there Mr. Pickwick began his studies of London life.
“How old is that horse, my friend?” asked he.
“Forty-two”, answered the cabman.
“What!” said Mr. Pickwick laying his hand upon the
notebook. The cabman repeated the answer and Mr. Pickwick wrote it down in his
note-book. “And how long do you keep him out at a time?” “Two or three weeks”,
answered the cabman.
“Weeks!” said Mr. Pickwick in surprise and he took out
his note-book again.
“We seldom take him out of the cab”, said the cabman.
“He is old, not very strong, and always falls down when we take him out of it.
So we tie him to the cab, the cab runs after him and pushes him.” Mr. Pickwick
wrote down every word told by the cabman in his note-book. He wanted to use the
information at a club meeting.
Soon they came to the inn “Golden Cross” where Mr.
Tupman, Mr. Snograss, and Mr. Winkle were waiting for their leader. The cabman
jumped down and Mr. Pickwick got out. “Here is your fare”, said Mr. Pickwick,
holding out a shilling to the cabman. But the cabman threw the money on the
ground and prepared to fight to Mr. Pickwick. “You are informer and want to
report on me”, cried the cabman.
“I am not”, said Mr. Pickwick.
“What did you want my number for?”
“I didn’t want your number”, said Mr. Pickwick.
“Why did you write it down, then?” asked the cabman.
“I didn’t write it down”, said Mr. Pickwick.
“You did”, said the cabman, “and I have got people who
will prove it. But I’ll teach you, if I get six months for it”.
The cabman knocked Mr. Pickwick’s spectacles off, then
followed the blow on his nose, and another on Mr. Pickwick’s side, the third
blow in Mr. Snodgrass’ eye, and the fourth, by the way of variety, in Mr.
Tupman’s back.
“Where is the policeman?” said Mr. Snodgrass.
People from the crowd gave some advices to the cabman
what to do next.
“You will answer for this”, cried Mr. Pickwick.
“Informers!” shouted the crowd.
“We are not,” cried Mr. Pickwick.
The crowd had been passive spectators of the scene but
now the people moved nearer and showed interest and readiness to help the
cabman. At that moment a tall young man, in a green coat, came suddenly from
the inn.
“What is that?” said he.
“Informers!” shouted the crowd again.
“You are not informers, are you?” said the young man
to Mr. Pickwick, and pushing the crowd back, explained everything to them.
“Come along,” said he pulling Mr. Pickwick after him
and talking all the time.
“Here, cabman, take your fare and go, this is a
respectable gentleman, I know him well, this way, Sir – where are your friends?
– all a mistake…”
The stranger led the way to the traveler’s
waiting-room, Mr. Pickwick and his friends followed.
Thus ended the first adventure of the Pickwickians.

Pupil. Speaking about the novel
“David Copperfield” we can say:
1. The main idea of his novel is the formation of a
person.
2. He paid the attention to the problem of brining up.
3. He wrote about the difficulties of beginning the
independent life.
4. Charles Dickens was the only English author who
spoke about school problems.
Teacher. It’s very important that
Charles Dickens paid attention to the problems of education, brining up and
the problems of childhood. That’s why we study his works at school.

Pupil. After reading the 7th
chapter of the novel “David Copperfield” we can make some conclusions
1. School didn’t carry out the main task – to give
good knowledge.
2. Chance people worked at schools.
3. There were cruel, rough anddisrespectattention in
old English school.
4. He appealed to the society: “Such schools have no
right to exist”.

«Николас
Teacher. He said about it many
times and we can see the cruel attention to the children in another novel
“Nicholas Nickleby”.
Narrator. Nicholas Nickleby was a
young man who lived with his mother and sister. After the death of Nicholas’s
father, the family had no money, so their life was very hard.
Mr. Ralth Nickleby, Nicholas’s uncle, was a rich man,
but he was wicked and greedy. He didn’t want to give any money to his dead
brother’s family. So he decided to find some work for Nicholas. He saw an
advertisement in the newspaper, which said that Mr. Squeers, a schoolmaster,
was looking for an assistant to teach at school which was far away in the
country.
Mr. Squeers kept a school for boys who had no parents.
Mr. Squeers was standing in the room of an inn in
London with his hands in his pockets. His appearance was not pleasant. He had
only one eye, his face was wrinkled, and cruel.
Not far from him, on a bench, sat a very small boy. He
sat quite still, with his hands on his knees, and from time to time looked at
Mr. Squeers with fear in his eyes. Suddenly the boy sneezed.
“Hey, what’s that?”said the schoolmaster in an unpleasant
voice.
“Nothing, sir.” said the little boy.
“Nothing, sir!” exclaimed Mr. Squeers.
“I sneezed sir”, said the boy, who was trembling with
fear.
“Oh, sneezed, did you? Then why did you say “nothing”,
sir?”
Narrator. Here the boy began to
cry. Mr. Squeers hit him on one side of his face, then on the other.
“Will you stop that noise. Then do it at once. Do you
hear?” cried the headmaster.
Narrator. At that moment the door
opened and Mr. Ralph Nickleby with Nicholas entered the room.
“Is Mr. Squeers here?” asked Ralph Nickleby.
“Yes,” said the schoolmaster. “What is it?”
“I saw your advertisement in the newspaper this
morning”, said Ralph Nickleby.
“Yes, sir. Will you sit down?” answered Mr. Squeers.
“This is my nephew, sir Mr. Nicholas Nickleby,” said
Ralph Nickleby.
“How do you do, sir?” said Mr. Squeers.
“Thanks, well. In your advertisement you say you want
an assistant”, said Nicholas.
“My nephew Nicholas is just the man you want. His
father is dead, he has no money and he wants to find work. I recommend him to
you. And I tell you that he will be a very good assistant. He has a good
education and he knows that if he doesn’t use this opportunity, I shall not
help his mother and sister.
“I see. You’ll be my assistant in my village school,”
said Mr. Squeers.
Next day Nicholas, Mr. Squeers and 5 boys went to the
village school. Atall, thinboymetthem. HisnamewasSmike. He was eighteen or
nineteen, but very thin. His clothes were old and too small for him. His eyes
were so sad that Nicholas felt sorry for him.
In the evening Nicholas sat down near a small stove in
the corner of the classroom. He was sad. He was thinking about his mother and
sister. He hoped that his uncle Ralph Nickleby would take care of them.
Suddenly he noticed Smike, who was on his knees before
the stove. He was looking at Nicholas. But when Nicholas looked at him, he
turned away at once with a frightened expression on his face.
“You must not be afraid of me,” said Nicholas in a
kind voice, “Are you cold?”
“N-n-o.”
“You are trembling,”asked Nicholas.
“No, I am not cold,” replied Smike quickly, “I am used
to cold”.
“Poor boy,” said Nicholas.
Smike burst into tears. He covered his face with his
hands and cried and cried and cried and could not stop.
“Hush,” said Nicholas and put his hand on boy’s
shoulder. “Be a man. There is always hope.”
“No,” cried Smike, “no, no hope for me! Pain and
fear, pain and fear for me. No hope, no hope!”
The bell rang for bed and Smike went away. With a
heavy heart Nicholas went to bed, too.
Squeers and his wife did not like Nicholas because he
was kind to the boys. And when they noticed that Smike loved Nicholas, they
began to hate the boy still more. So, now Smike received more blows than
before. Nicholas saw it but could do nothing.
One day, soon after that, Mr. and Mrs. Squeers could
not find Smike. They were angry.
Next morning Nicholas heard the sound of the wheels.
He looked out of the window and saw Mr. and Mrs. Squeers and Smike. The boy’s
arms and legs were tied. They brought him into the house and untied his arms
and legs. After dinner Mr. Squeers came into the classroom.
“Is every boy here?” cried Mr. Squeers.
Every boy was there, but each boy was afraid to speak.
Squeers left the room and soon returned with Smike.
“Well,” he said to Smike, “Have you anything to say?”
Mike said nothing.
“Nothing, I suppose,” said Squeers. “Step aside, Mrs.
Squeers, my dear.”
“Ha! Ha! Ha!” laughed Mrs. Squeers.
Squeers lifted his stick and struck Smike with it. The
boy screamed. Squeers struck him again and again. Suddenly Nicholas Nickleby
stood up and cried in a loud voice: “Stop!”
“Who cried “Stop?” said Mr. Squeers.
“I,” said Nicholas and stepped forward. “This must not
go on.”
“Must not go on!” cried Mr. Squeers.
“No! Isaymustnot. I will not let you beat the boy,”
said Nicholas.
“Sitdown!” screamedSqueers
“Don’ttouchhim! I am stronger than you, don’t touch
the boy!” cried Nicholas.
Nicholas went upstairs, put his clothes into his bag
and went away.
He spent the night in an empty barn near the road. He
had no money to stop at an inn. When he woke up the next morning, somebody was
standing near him. ItwasSmike.
