    From the history of Ryazan
My hometown Ryazan is quite an ancient city. According to the historical documents Ryazan was founded in 1095. The town was situated on a high hill between two rivers: the Trubezh and the Lybed, not far from the Oka River. The land around the town attracted our ancestors by vast meadows, deep forests rich in animals and birds and by the rivers rich in fish. The original settlement of the Vyatichi (an eastern Slavonic tribe) was located here. People lived by crop-growing, hunting and fishing. The Oka - the "great river of the Slavs and Rus" as the Arabs called it, connected the trade centres of Baltic lands with the countries of the Orient up to China.
Ryazan was the capital of the Principality of Ryazan. It should be mentioned that the capital was what we now call Old Ryazan. It is a village now and it is situated 50 km to the south-east from modern Ryazan on the Oka River. So, as you see, first Old Ryazan appeared and it was the capital of the Principality of Ryazan.
In the 13 th century Ryazan was the first to meet the invaders of the Golden Horde. In 1237 Khan Batu came to Ryazan and all the towns of the Principality were burnt down and their population was almost completely wiped out. When speaking about mongolo-tatar invasion one can't help mentioning Evpaty Kolovrat. He was the warrior's leader. He and his 1700 warriors were late for the battle against Khan Batu. That was why he followed the enemies and attacked them. Mongolo-tatars were very surprised to see Evpaty Kolovrat and his warriors. They thought the dead people of Ryazan became alive. The battle was terrible. All Russian people were killed. But the history remembers them and honours them. In fact Evpaty Kolovrat and his people were the first partisans in Russia. This was the end of the history of Old Ryazan, because the town was often attacked by the enemies. And so another town, Pereyaslavl Ryazansky, as modern Ryazan was called then, became the capital of the Principality of Ryazan. That was in the mid-14 century.

    From the history of Ryazan
In the 12th and 13th centuries Ryazan was ranked as a Great Principality famous for its richness. In 1521 Pereyaslavl Ryazansky became one of the parts of the Russian State. In 1778 according to the edict of Katherine II Pereyaslavl Ryazansky got the name of Ryazan and 18 years later in 1796 it became the centre of the Ryazan Province.
In 1780 the general plan of Ryazan was established. As a result the town was divided into districts, straight central streets were planned, new buildings that became the monument of architecture were erected. In the second half of the 19th century Ryazan became the transport centre. The railroad appeared which connected Ryazan this Moscow and other Russian cities. Industry and trade were developed here.
Now Ryazan is an industrial centre. The population of the city has grown from 36809 people in 1910 up to more than half a million nowadays.
Ryazan is famous for its outstanding people: Evpaty Kolovrat, I. P. Pavlov - a prominent physiologist, К. E. Tsiolkovsky, I. V. Michurin, F. A. Poletayev who became the hero of the USSR and the National Hero of Italy during World War II,
    S. A. Esenin and many others. It goes without saying that we, Ryazan’s residents, are proud of our city.

    My home neighborhood Kanischevo
Since my birthday I have been living in Kanischevo and I do not regret it. This modern neighbourhood is located near the Oka River and several beautiful lakes by the village Kanischevo. The name of this village was first mentioned in the books of scribes in the 17th century; the word originated from the name of a grassland for horses located in this area. In this village there is an old church, which is very important for the residents because today more and more young and old people strive for religion and often go to church.
When my mother’s parents moved to Kanischevo in 1972 the development of this neighbourhood had just started. My mum tells that when they moved to Kanischevo there were only several five-storey houses, one or two shops, two schools, and from their window they had a wonderful view over the village and the Oka River. That was terrific! Unfortunately, now this is not the case…
At present Kanischevo is a big residential area with a great many of blocks of flats, cafes, departments stores, banks, markets, drugstores, schools and kindergartens. Here we have the biggest hospital in Russia – The Regional Clinical Hospital called “OKB”. I am proud to say that my grandfather took part in its construction!

    My home neighborhood Kanischevo
The present look of Kanischevo is much different from that of 1972 when my mother moved here. On the one hand, we see many positive features such as the appearance of new comfortable blocks of flats, the Sailors’ park, numerous shops, more playgrounds for children, music and sport schools.
But on the other hand, we can’t but notice that lots of cars driving quite close to our homes, very polluted air and water make our life in this neighbourhood more stressful and unsafe. Fortunately, there are no factories and plants in Kanischevo, but they are located nearby in Nedostoyevo and Prioksky. This enormously influences the atmospheric pollution of the air and water in my home neighbourhood and it is really an urgent problem. But still I cant’ but love my neighbourhood where I live and study at school № 35.

    My favourite places in Ryazan
One of my favourite places in Ryazan is Gagarin Park located in Prioksky. I often go for a walk there and admire its beautiful alleys in all seasons of year. I walk through the park twice a week when I go to the belly dance trainings in the recreation center “DK Stankozavod”. For me Gagarin Park is a place to relax, to meet friends and enjoy fresh air, tall trees, green grass, and bird’s singing– those things which we lack in our everyday life.

    My favourite places in Ryazan

The most popular place of most young people in Ryazan and me included is Victory Square. It seems to be the real centre of the city, where you can see crowds of people from morning till evening. It doesn’t sleep even at night because people always hurry either to or from the railway station situated not far from the square. But what makes this square so attractive?
Well, I love its fast tempo: people are hurrying up in all directions. But! There are benches to stop and have a rest here just in the centre of the square around the fountain. Besides, nearby there is a McDonald's so loved by kids and youngsters where one can have a snack, it’s not very good for health, of course, but it’s tasty!
Then, I adore that huge trade centre opened last April. It’s like in Moscow, New York, London… In the evening the square becomes even more attractive thanks to a lot of illumination. In winter Christmas tree brings a fairy tale to the square. Father the Frost, Snow Maiden, snow balls, snow flakes, New Year’s Feasts… What can be better!

    9 слайд

In the opposite side of the square there is a monument to those killed in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). It’s a tradition for nearly every newly married couple to lay flowers to the monument’s fire as a symbol of our gratitude to those who saved our country from fascists.
Behind the monument we can find one more favourite place of kids and youngsters – it’s a skating rink. It’s where you can easily make friends and enjoy skating on a frosty day.
Not far from the skating rink there is an amusement park called “Prio-land”. When I was small I used to go there in summer. Perhaps I will do it one more time this year. It would be pretty good! It’s a pity there are so few such places in Ryazan where we could entertain ourselves. It’s great that we have at least “Prio-land”. That’s why I love so much Victory Square.

    Landmarks of Ryazan
There is no doubt that the most ancient part of our city is the territory of the Ryazan Kremlin. It was from here where Ryazan actually started. Like many old Russian towns Pereyaslavl Ryazansky was founded as a fortress. It was surrounded by high wooden walls with towers which haven't survived from that period. Now the Kremlin is an architectural monument of the 17-19th centuries.
Now the Kremlin is surrounded by a nice park. If you walk through the park you'll come to a staged belfry of the Cathedral of the Assumption. In point of fact the foundation of the staged belfry was laid in 1789 after an original design of S. Vorotilov, a Kostroma architect. But the design was rejected "because of objections on the part of G. Ryumin & Court Councillor Malshin": the design didn't agree with the Neoclassical style of the period. The first stage of the belfry was built in 1793 after the Vorotilov's draft, but altered so as to bring it closer to the style. In 1816 the second stage was constructed, it was designed by I. Russko & financed by G. Ryumin. The third stage was designed after K. Thon, a famous architect of that time. In 1840 G. Ryumin financed the construction of the fourth stage & the spire, which were designed by the well-known architect N. Voronikhin. The height of the spire is about 8 m. On the whole the belfry is an outstanding architectural monument.
When you pass the belfry you come to the magnificent Cathedral of the Assumption. The first Cathedral of the Assumption designed by Sharypin collapsed in the process of its construction in 1680ies. A contest for a new contract was announced & Bukhvostov won the bidding. At first the Cathedral had a public gallery which was rebuilt twice in the 19th century.

    Landmarks of Ryazan
When speaking about the Kremlin you can't help mentioning Cathedral Square. To the left you can see the Cathedral of the Nativity with the Church of St. John the Baptist in its rear; in the centre there is the Cathedral of the Assumption; to the right you can see the Church of the Apparition of Christ & the Spassky Monastery's entrance gate.
As you already know the Ryazan Kremlin was founded in 1095 as a town fortress of Pereyaslavl Ryazansky. It was built on a high hill surrounded in the north by the Trubezh, while the Lybed flanked it in the south & the east, & a man-made moat guarded the approaches to it in the west. The Kremlin was surrounded by high ramparts (up to 18 m high in their present state). The ramparts were enforced with woode stockades until the mid-18th century.
Now Cathedral Square is a place where our citizens like to come to.

    12 слайд

The main square of Ryazan is Lenin Square. It is the heart of the city. Several streets run from it in various directions: Sobornaya Street, Mayakovsky Street, Pervomaisky Avenue and others. You can see the monument to Lenin in this square.
Well, the former name of Lenin Square is Khlebnaya (Bread) Square or Novobazarnaya (Newmarket) Square.
In the first quarter of the I9th century trade (or bread) rows were erected along both sides of the square. They were built in classical style. Some of them have remained till nowadays and they are being restored now.
Behind the bread rows there are 2 streets: Krasnoryadskaya (its name has never been changed during the history) and Pot Street which is now Koltsov Street. Krasnoryadskaya Street got its name from manufactured goods which were sold there. In Russian manufactured goods were called beautiful ("red" in Russian) goods. And the word "Krasnoryadskaya" means the rows of beautiful goods. In Pot Street pottery was sold & that gave the street its name.
At the end of the 19th century the chapel was built in Khlebnaya Square. A lot of trade rows appeared around it. They were built mostly of wood. Later the chapel was destroyed.
The square got its present name in 1924. And 13 years later the monument to Lenin was erected in the square. It was opened on the 1st of May 1937. The author of the monument was Alexeyev. The monument was made of ferroconcrete in Moscow. Since then it became a tradition to hold meetings & demonstrations here. But in fact now we see quite another monument in the square. As a matter of fact the first monument was taken away & placed in the central square in Solotcha (20 km from Ryazan). And now we see the monument of bronze by Manizer. It was opened on the 22nd of April 1957. In the early 90-s due to the anticommunism movement the monument was taken away, but then it was replaced. That was in 1997. And at present you can see the monument in the square.

    13 слайд

The former Ilyinskaya, then Sobornaya (Cathedral), then Soviet and now Sobornaya Square was in the city plan of the 18th century and was planned as the centre of the city. Now there is not only a square, but a beautiful park here. It was founded in the early 30-s of the 20th century. The park grew and at the entrance you can see Propylaea. In the middle of the park you can see a beautiful chapel, built in 1995. It was erected specially for the 900th anniversary of our city.
On this square the shoe factory is situated. It began its work in 1922. But first this factory was in the other end of Ryazan. Now it is called Ryazan-West.
On the opposite side of the park you can see the building of the former Guard House, built in 1838 by Voronikhin.
And quite opposite there is lyceum № 4. It was founded in 1939.
Near the square there is the Theatre on Sobornaya. The theatre was built in 1853 by Voronikhin and then rebuilt by Schyotkin. Thanks to the particular design of its facade and right proportions it looks like a small & festive toy. This building was the main stage of the drama theatre company. After they had moved to a new building in Theatre Square, the Theatre for Young Spectators occupied this building. And as it has already been mentioned this theatre is called the Theatre on Sobornaya.
When speaking about Sobornaya Square one can't help mentioning the Embankment, the most favourite place of our citizens. Many things attract people here: the Kremlin, the Trubezh & the monument to S. Esenin. It was decided to set up a monument to the great Russian poet S. Esenin here on the Trubezh embankment. Esenin used to visit these places, enjoyed the beauty of Ryazan, of the Ryazan Kremlin & the meadows of the Oka River. The monument was unveiled on the 2nd of October, 1975, during the celebration of Esenin’s 80th birthday. The designer of the monument is the famous Soviet sculptor A.P. Kibalnikov. The composition of the monument is unusual. It seems that the bronze figure of the poet is coming out of the earth. Probably the author wanted to emphasize the poet’s ties with his native land & people for Esenin was a peasant’s son by origin.

    14 слайд

Theatre square can be called the cultural centre of the city. It's interesting to say that Theatre Square was planned by Emil Kio, who is now known as a famous illusionist. There is a building of the drama theatre in the centre of the square. The facade of the building is decorated with columns of the Corinthian order. This theatre was opened in 1961. But its history began in 1787. First, the theatre occupied another building in Sobornaya Square where the Theatre on Sobornaya works now.
Well, originally there was no square here. This place was called Yamskaya Zastava. That was the outskirts of the town. And the street which is now called Tsiolkovsky Street was called Yamskaya Street. There were few buildings with orchards here. In point of fact the street was out of the town. The whole district, Yamskaya Zastava & Yamskaya Street, was called Yamskaya Sloboda, and it became the part of the town only in 1927. Yet there were no any changes. Buildings were scarce. In 1956 there were only 2 many-storied buildings here. But now the street has changed greatly. You can see a lot of buildings now. And at the very beginning of the street you can see a monument to Tsiolkovsky, our famous countryman, who was born in the village of Izhevskoye (Spassky region) (1857-1935).

    conclusion
In conclusion of my presentation I’d like to add that Ryazan has been constantly developing and changing, growing older, and sometimes becoming younger together with us. For everyone a hometown is not only a place where he or she was born. It’s a place where we like to live and work, where every corner resembles about some happy events in our childhood and youth. It’s a place where the first love happens and the first frustration comes. It’s a place where you are waited for by your close people. And of course, it’s a place where you always want to return to from a trip.
East or west, home is best! This is said about my hometown Ryazan.
