Krakatoa was a small, beautiful island in Indonesia. There was a volcano in this island.

During the night of 26^th August 1883 something terrible happened: the volcano erupted. It destroyed most of the island.

The waves in the sea were 15 metres high. They travelled 13,000 kilometres and destroyed houses and villages. About 36,000 people died.

The noise of the eruption was the loudest noise in the history of the world. People heard it 4,800 kilometres away.

Dust from the volcano travelled all around the world. For three years people all over the world saw beautiful bright sunsets. These colouful sunsets happened because of the dust from Krakatoa.

In 1928 a new island appeared. Slowly it started to grow bigger and bigger. By 1973 it was 190 metres above sea level.

Its name is Anak Krakatao –child of Krakatao.
