EDUCATION IN AUSTRALIA AND IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Each state and territory in Australia makes
its own laws about education. This is also true in the United
States. Both Australia and the United States have private schools
available in addition to public schools.
In the United States, children between the
ages of 5 and 16 are required to attend school. In Australia
children between the ages of 6 and 15 attend school.
Kindergartens are required in the USA, but not in Australia.
Australia’s four – term school year begins in February with a
two – week holiday between the terms. The fourth and final term ends
around December 20. The Christmas holidays coincide with the end of
school and the beginning of the summer vacations. The students return to school in February. In the USA
children have their summer vacations from June until August.
Australia’s primary or elementary school consists of grades one
through six. Secondary school consists of grade seven through twelve.
All secondary students wear uniforms. Students in public schools in
America do not wear uniform at school.
AN AMERICAN COLLEGE/
UNIVERSITY.
The
period of study in a college or University is four years. Each
year comprises two terms or semesters. The first, or fall term,
usually begins the last week of August and continues until the
middle of December with four weeks intermission for the Christmas holidays.
The second semester begins in January and continues until the end
of May.
The average student is expected to take 15 or
16 credits each semester. In this way he may earn 32 credits
during the academic year. When the student has accumulated more than
30 credits he passes to the next class and becomes a second – year
student or sophomore. After a student has successfully completed four
years of study and acquired 124 or 150 credits he become a
candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science
and is ready for graduation.

EDUCATIONIONAL SYSTEM IN GREAT BRITAIN
Types of schools. All British children must stay at school from the age of 5
until they are 16. Many of them stay longer and take final
examination when they are 17 or 18. There are different types of
state secondary schools .They are divided into following types:
·
Grammar schools
·
Technical
schools
·
Modern schools
·
Comprehensive
schools.
There are also many schools which the State doesn’t control.
They are private schools. They charge fees for educating children
and many of them are boarding schools, at which pupils live during
the term time.
After leaving school many young people go to colleges or
further education. Those who become a students at Colleges of
Technology ( called “Techs” ) come from different schools at
different ages between 15 and 17. The lectures at such colleges,
each an hour long, start at 8.15 and end at 4.45 in the afternoon.
At the age of 16 pupils take school – leaving examinations in
several subjects at the Ordinary level. The exam used to be
conducted by eight independent board, most of them connected with
the university. This exam is called the General Certificate of
Education ( GCE ). Pupils of comprehensive schools take the exam
called the Certificate of Secondary Education either with or instead
of the GCE.
Universities and Colleges in Great Britain. There are over 90 universities
in Great Britain.
Full courses of study offer the degree of Bachelor of Art or
Science. Most degree courses at universities last three years,
language courses – four years ( including a year spent abroad ).
Medicine and dentistry courses are longer ( 5-7 years ).
Students may receive grants from the Local Education Authority
to help pay for books, accommodation, transport and food. This grant
depends on the income of their parents.

Schools in the United Kingdom
Education in the United Kingdom is compulsory from the
age of five to sixteen. Children under five go either to nursery schools, or to
playgroups. Both types of pre-primary educational establishments are non-state;
the difference is that a child spends the whole day in a nursery school, while
he or she can stay in a playgroup only for some hours a day. Anyway, the main
aim of such kind of establishments is to make the children ready for primary
schools. Children play, draw, model things from clay and learn to work
together.
Compulsory education for all children begins at the
age of five. There are 35,000 state schools in Britain. All of them are the
responsibility of the Local Educational Authorities (LEA). The LEA caters for
the curriculum and exams in each region; they also appoint head teachers and
held assessment tests at schools.
Primary school is for children from five to eleven. At first the studies are
more like playing than working; English teachers say that this is the best way
for children to get used to school.
Eton College
A long time ago the famous public schools used to be for poor people, but
now they are private schools and you have to pay to go there (чтобы там учиться). Public schools are not for everybody, they are the
most expensive schools for the rich. Do you know about Eton?
What is it?
It is the most famous public school. A year at Eton costs £17,000. It is
very old, and a lot of important people used to be students there. It is an
all-boys school. Prince William, the Queen's grandson, went to Eton too.
English in focus
– Eton College is the most famous English all-boys public school
- Prince William the son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana studied there.
A Typical Day at School in America
My name is Patricia Shannon. I am a history teacher at
Simsbury High School in the state of Connecticut. I'd like to tell you about
the daily activities at our school.
Each day begins at 8:00 a.m. Students first go to
homeroom, where the homeroom teacher asks, "Who's
absent?" and informs the students of any special events.
During this time, the principal of our school often makes
special announcements over the intercom. Yesterday
he announced that our girl's gymnastics and soccer teams had won
their final game. The boy's ice hockey team also did well this year. At the end
of homeroom period, which lasts 10 minutes, the students go to
their first class of the day.
A Typical Day at School in America
One club that I advise is the Diversity
Club. We talk about how important it is to understand people of different
cultures and religious groups. This March we had a Diversity Day. Students from
our school attended seminars about cultural differences.
Students had an opportunity to give their opinions and
make recommendations.
Answer the questions
1. What
does Ms. Shannon do?
2. What
time does the school day begin?
3. How
many days a year do the students at Ms Shannon’s school go to school?
4. What
time does school end?
5. What
do some students do after school?
6. What
is Diversity Day? Do you think it is an important day? What is an example of
extracurricular activity?
7. Does
your school have extracurricular activities?
Education in Australia
Hi! I am a student in Sydney, Australia. I go to
Casimir College. I like my school because it has a happy atmosphere. My school
offers a wide range of subjects. My favourite subjects are Legal Studies and
Ancient History. My hobbies are reading and listening to music. I also love
going to the beach. In Australia it can get very hot in the summer and very
cold in the winter. My parents migrated to Australia when they were young. I have
a Portuguese background and I have been to Portugal once.
Paul Vieira.
Extra Curricular Activities
The school offers a wide range of team sports as well
as athletics, swimming, and cross country competitions. The performing arts
program provides activities such as the school production, school orchestra
and music ensembles.
Student involvement is encouraged through participation in a variety of
competitions and the presentation of Academic Achievement Awards. Further
opportunities for student development are offered through debating, public
speaking, student government.
Letters from Australia.
Hi Russia,
You may believe that we have kangaroos in our back
yards and koalas in our trees. They are indeed native to Australia and are
symbols of our beautiful wildlife, but they are not found on our city streets.
New South Wales, the state in which I live, is a
multi-cultural place. We usually all get along well with each other and there
is a strong feeling of belonging.
I am in year 12 at Casimir College. I study Biology,
Maths, Legal Studies, English, Business Studies, Computer Science and Religion.
I have two younger sisters. I was born in Beirut, Lebanon and came to
Australia when I was very young. When I finish year 12, I hope to go to
University and either become a teacher or study Business Management
Jaoo Bashi
Dear friends in Russia,
Hi, my name is Daniela Camacho and I am 17 years old.
I am originally from Portugal. I am in year 11 and the name of my
school is Casimir College. It's a good school, because we get to* meet people
from different cultures. How is your school in Russia? Do you wear a uniform to
school? We have to wear a uniform at our school. My hobbies are collecting
stamps and ice-skating. I also like to go out with my friends during school
holidays.
